If this is the first time you've played Call of Duty, you will need to sign up in order to register your clan name with the servers. They will basically check the name and determine whether it has already been taken or if it's available. This is where there's a big trade off to early adoption of new titles: on the one hand, early adopters have to put up with a myriad of patches and tweaks as things are nerfed, balanced, or sometimes just fixed.
